As winter blankets the world in a serene layer of snow, it brings with it a unique charm and a cozy atmosphere. For many, the colder months can also bring a dip in mood and energy. Combat the winter blues with the uplifting power of essential oils. These aromatic oils can transform your surroundings, creating a warm and inviting ambiance. Just the act of smelling essential oils has been shown to lift the spirits. You can use them by diffusing them with a special diffuser or, by adding a few drops to a pan of simmering water to scent your house.
Please keep in mind that not all essential oils are created equal, so a good quality oil is necessary to ensure that it is natural and not an artificially created scent. I use Monara Essential Oils. You can order them through my affiliate link on Instagram. If you would like other oil recommendations, I have found that there are great oils through companies like Young Living and Aura Cacia.
I myself prefer organic oils whenever possible and love the smell of diffusing oils in my home. While the oils listed here are generally considered safe, never ingest essential oils, and do not use oils on the skin without diluting them with a carrier oil first. Finally, please keep in mind that due to the concentration of plant oils in essential oils, some can be toxic to pets even when they are diluted and being diffused, so please do a little research before using essential oils in homes with animals. With that being said, working with essential oils is extremely rewarding when used safely, so enjoy them.
Here are the five best essential oils for boosting your mood during the winter season.
1. Citrus Burst: Sweet Orange
Kickstart your winter mornings with the invigorating scent of sweet orange essential oil. Known for its bright and cheery aroma, this citrusy delight can help chase away feelings of lethargy and bring a burst of energy. It also can elicit memories of summer and sunshine. Diffuse it in your living space to create a refreshing atmosphere or add a few drops to your morning shower for an energizing start to your day.
2. Comforting Warmth: Cinnamon Essential Oil
Embrace the cozy essence of winter with the warming fragrance of cinnamon bark essential oil. This spicy and sweet aroma can evoke feelings of comfort and nostalgia. Diffuse it in your home to create a snug ambiance reminiscent of holiday gatherings or a warm cup of chai tea.. Cinnamon essential oil is also known for its mood-boosting properties, making it a perfect choice for battling the winter blues.
3. Calming Serenity: Lavender Essential Oil
This is one of my favorite essential oils because it has so many diverse uses. I put a few drops in my bath water with Epsom Salts on days I need to unwind. In addition, you can combat the winter chill with the calming and soothing scent of lavender essential oil. It is renowned for its relaxing properties. Lavender can help alleviate stress and promote a sense of tranquility. Diffuse it in the evenings to unwind and create a peaceful environment conducive to a good night sleep. Bonus: it can help people with insomnia relax their mind. Consider adding a few drops to a tissue and placing next to your pillow for an extra dose of serenity while you sleep. Please remember that some oils can stain clothing and linens. To prevent this, I usually use a special cotton handkerchief that is reserved only for essential oils. I add a few drops of lavender to the handkerchief and keep it on my night stand near me when I go to bed.
4. Eucalyptus Revival: Eucalyptus Essential Oil
Winter often brings the cold and flu season along with it. Keep your spirits high and ease respiratory irritation, such as coughing, with the refreshing aroma of eucalyptus essential oil. Its invigorating scent can help clear congestion and promote easy breathing. Put a few drops in the shower to ease a stuffy nose or diffuse eucalyptus oil in your home to create a clean and revitalizing atmosphere, providing relief from winter sniffles and contributing to an overall sense of well-being. A side note about Eucalyptus, please use responsibly sourced Eucalyptus. It is the only food Koala bears eat.
5. Woodsy Uplift: Cedarwood Essential Oil
Connect with nature even when it's cold outside by introducing the earthy scent of cedarwood essential oil into your space. It is known for its grounding and uplifting qualities, cedarwood can evoke a sense of stability and balance. Diffuse cedarwood oil during meditation or moments of reflection to foster a calm and centered mindset. Its warm and woody aroma can be especially comforting during the winter months.
Bonus Oil: Silver Fir Essential Oil
Silver fir is a reminder that even during the coldest nights, spring is not that far away. Silver fir evokes the memories of evergreen forests and the restfulness of winter. It fuels uplifting thoughts of holiday trees and being cozy by the fire. Diffuse silver fir to feel connected to the changing seasons and the calm and quiet of the night. In addition, it is great for congestion and a good alternative to Eucalyptus for assisting in the care of symptoms caused by the cold or flu.
Winter doesn't have to be synonymous with a dip in mood. Harness the power of essential oils to transform your surroundings and elevate your spirits. Whether you're seeking an energizing boost, a comforting embrace, or a calming sanctuary, these five essential oils can be your go-to allies for creating a mood-enhancing winter haven. Embrace the magic of aromatherapy and let these aromatic wonders infuse your winter days with warmth and positivity.
