Part 1: Why Doing A Cleanse Is Important! Cleanses and detoxifications are used as ways to improve health and well-being. It is true that we have natural detoxification pathways in the form of our liver, kidneys, urination, and elimination pathways. However, these systems evolved with nature and are great for detoxing natural toxins that we were exposed to prior to the industrial revolution. Additionally, as humans, we have never been more inundated with toxins than we are now.
Toxins show up everywhere in the form of air pollution, hormones in our food, pesticides, BPA, microplastics, medications, heavy metals like the mercury and aluminum that are in food, vaccines, and teeth fillings, and the several additives added as preservatives for our food and cosmetics. Many of these toxins were developed AFTER our natural detoxification systems within our body evolved. At the same time these toxins became abundant in our environment, the consumption of organic plants and herbs that support our natural detoxification pathways declined in favor of processed, cheap, easy to grab foods. All of these things contribute to an elevated toxic load.
Scientific research has shown that people who eat a standard American NON ORGANIC diet (SAD) have elevated levels of pesticides in their urine and breast milk when compared to those that eat an organic diet. While this demonstrates that our elimination system is removing pesticides, we are constantly adding them every time we eat. In addition, research has shown that people who eat the standard American diet have elevated levels of chronic illness including high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, colon cancer, breast cancer, high cholesterol, acute illnesses, and obesity, especially when these individuals are compared to individuals that eat a diet with more plants in it. Frankly, we as scientists and healthcare practitioners have no idea what the tipping point is in the body or when these pesticides and toxins start causing damage to the cells and DNA in the body. The only thing we do know is that they do cause damage to the body and DNA.
Finally, we know that there are more cancers in the world per capita than any other time in recorded history. There are more chronic illnesses and increasing infertility. We are also seeing increasing developmental issues, increasing obesity in young people, and more chronic illness in children than ever before. While there are several factors that can contribute to these health issues, increased toxin exposure has been correlated with many of these health issues. We cannot rule out toxic overload as a contributing factor. This is why I try to eat organic and grow my own food as often as possible. Additionally, I try to do a cleanse every 6 months to decrease any excess build up that may have accumulated, and by eliminating alcohol, decreasing simple sugars, processed food, and exposure toxins .
